Subject: Gardiner's Island

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the pictures that you posted of Gardiner's Island. I have recently become very interested in Genealogy and find that I am a direct descendent of Lion Gardiner.

Upon retirement, William Church Davis, Brigadier General, O.R.C., U.S.A. pursued his interest in genealogy and published his findings in a book entitled "The Ancestry and Posterity of Joseph Davis(1773-1865) of Norway, New York and His Wife, Elizabeth Hallock Davis" published by Press of the Reporter Co. of Walton, NY in 1927. In this book my mother is incorrectly listed as Rosetta Tompkins, daughter of Ward Duane Tompkins and Florence Greeley. My mothers correct name is Roseltha.

This book states that Lion purchased an island from Indian Chief Wyandance,Montauk Sachem for "one big black dog, one gun, some powder and shot, a gallon of rum,and three Dutch blankets." Gardiner's title was later confirmed by the Royal Governor. An old family Bible in possession of the Gardiner family on Gardiner's Island, written in Lion Gardiner's own handwriting , is the following "then I went to an Island of my own, which I had bought and purchased of the Indians, called by them Monachohack, by us, Isle of Wight".

I can totally understand the honor you must have felt to be invited to the island. I hope the family will be able to continue to preserve this treasure of American History.
