West Neck Harbor Cruising Guide

West Neck Harbor is located on the South-West corner of Shelter Island.  The harbor has many shallow areas, but is a very well protected harbor.  Shell Beach is located on the south side of the harbor and is a great beach for sunning and swimming.  The harbor also offer some great exploring opportunities by dingy.

Here are some local regulations you will need to know while in West Neck Harbor:

  • Pumping out in the harbor is illegal and punishable by law. Please see the marine services in West Neck Harbor to find out where to get pumped out. Help keep our harbor clean.

  • Shell fishing is illegal without a permit. For information on obtaining a permit from the town of Shelter Island CLICK HERE.

  • Anchoring is limited to the south-west section of the harbor.  See our Anchorage Section for more information.

  • While there is a 20 mph speed limit in the harbor, there is a wake restriction inside the harbor. Please be aware of your wake, especially while entering or exiting the narrow entrance to the harbor.

  • No personal Watercraft operation in Town Waters.WNsigns.jpg (29481 bytes)

  • These harbor regulations are also posted at the entrance.

West Neck Harbor offers plenty of things for the family to do and explore. Kayaks, Shell Beach, and exploring by dinghy is just the beginning.  See Our Things to Do Page for more information.

There are also several nice places to eat nearby.  See our our Restaurants Page and Local Groceries Page to see what is nearby.
